Race to Nowhere Follow-Up

Did you attend the showing of “Race to Nowhere” on Wednesday, February 9th? (If not, read about it in The Lowell.) Did you love it? Hate it? Have something to say about it? We’d love to hear your feedback!
Some things to think about:
-Did you find the film relevant to Lowell’s culture, or did it miss the mark? Why, or why not?
-Did you bring your parents to the PTSA showing of the film? What were their impressions?
-Have you noticed any changes in your teachers? Lighter homework loads, perhaps? Perhaps not?
-After watching the film, what are some ways you think the learning environment at Lowell could be bettered?

Academic Atmosphere

Freshmen: Is Lowell hard? Did you apply and come here just because your parents made you? Because it’s a good school?

Sophomores: Did you take the chemistry honors test just because you didn’t want to get left behind? Do you absolutely love chemistry?

Juniors: Regret taking APUSH? Did you do it just because everyone else did?

Seniors: Are you taking math this year? Did you do it just because it would look good on your transcript?

Lowellites: Have you ever felt overloaded? Stressed? Even for just one split second, ever wish you could have the “normal” high school experience? Ever wonder what it’d be like to go to Wash? Lincoln?

Think about it.

As “motivated” students, we have so much pressure in our lives. Parents, teachers, friends, ourselves. So many of us take APs and honors in courses we don’t really love, just so we can get into a “good college.” So many of us join clubs and extracurriculars because, hey, I love tutoring, I love debating, but dang, that’s going to look good on my college application too.

All this pressure pushes us to cheat. Other people are getting an unfair advantage, and it seems like everyone is doing it. Plus, you just really need to get that grade in physics.

Lowell is a wonderful place. The people here are amazing. We came as the top students from middle school. But sometimes, the pressure here, the myths that taking 7 AP classes will get you into Stanford, that extra 70 points on your SAT is going to make a difference, the academic atmosphere, goes a little wrong.

Student Body Council is trying to tackle this issue, via raising awareness and working out policies with administration, Wellness, the School Site Council, and the Parent Teacher Student Association. We are not anti-achievement.

We’re thinking about increasing Wellness Center visits. Only letting people take 7th classes if that 7th class is non-academic. More Peer Resources. Things like that. Tell us your suggestions.

Heard about the scary caps on APs? It’s not what you think. We want a maximum of 4 AP’s per semester, and you can petition for more. This is all tentative at the moment and we’re still working things out with administration.

We just want you to relax a little. Get a little more sleep. Enjoy your high school experience a little more. Smile a little more. You’re never going to get these years back. (And honestly, that extra AP you’re thinking about taking for next year is probably going to hurt you than help you.)

Winterball

Lights. Cameras. Music. Winterball this year was nothing short of a glamorous

production. Hundreds of students lined up outside the SFDC Galleria as they awaited

a fun-filled evening with lovers and friends (Usher reference, hollaaa?). The snow-

decorated tables, ambient blue uplighting, and soft fog created the mystical holiday feel

as guests partied the night away. If people weren’t bumping to the beats played by M3

Entertainment’s DJ Rodd and DJ J-Nauks (or swooning by their table), they were over at

the organic ice cream bar catered by Three Twin’s Ice Cream, taking memorable photos

sponsored by Lifetouch, or exploring one of the four floors in the elegant venue. As the

night went on, we even got a chance to watch Mr. IshiBOSShi bust a few moves—what

a way to kick off the holiday season! Having you all there was truly one of the greatest

gifts of all. ☺

Winterfaire

The courtyard &arcade was bustling with people on December 17, 2010. After a long week of finals, both students and teachers alike built up an appetite and were ready to eat! With blue tickets in hand, people headed to club booths to fill their stomachs’. Over 30 clubs sold a variety of delicious foods & drinks; everything from freshly grilled burgers, dry ice drinks, and falafels was available. I can’t speak for everyone, but people seemed to be having a great time. Winterfaire was definitely an amazing way to end the first semester & to kick off Winterbreak.

So basically, Winterfaire didn’t turn out as bad as I had expected. The rain totally threw me off because the performances had to be held in the auditorium, and this totally had my balls in a bunch. I also felt the stress from Club Coordinator Miranda Wong because she had to have new table arrangements, so I expected it to be a really bad day. But this was not the case. Thanks to fellow SBC members, they helped me make posters to get the word out that the performances were to be held in the auditorium. Even though I had to run back and forth from the auditorium and catwalk to inform people of this sudden change, everything worked out for the better. Students were allowed to enjoy their foods and drinks, and then stroll to the auditorium and enjoy the performances while sitting down. It was a relaxing atmosphere, and I was glad to see a lot of people come out of their way just to watch the performances. To conclude this blurb, I just want to thank all the people that participated at Winterfaire as dancers, vendors and most importantly, STUDENTS! To all the jerks that skipped school, I shake my head. Hope you guys had fun!!!
